About the Founder

Ocean & Martin founder Jill Smith established the practice to fill a significant need in the art market for an experienced and knowledgeable resource who could advise collectors as well as manage and consult artists.

Jill has spent close to a decade working in sales and artist management in New York City having held positions at Kim Heirston Art Advisory and David Zwirner Gallery where she developed expertise in private sales & acquisitions, comprehensive market development, and career development for a world-renowned roster of leading contemporary artists.

She is passionate about cultivating connoisseurship amongst new and experienced collectors alike, while educating both collectors and artists on all aspects of the art market, along with developing artistic careers. Jill has curated emerging artist exhibitions and placed works by established artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Norman Lewis, Julie Mehretu, and Alice Neel.

Jill earned her bachelor's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed the postgraduate Art Business program at New York University. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Soap Factory in Minneapolis, MN, and is currently affiliated with The Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's Young Collectors Council.
